Stump Grinding in Lake Buena Vista
An old stump keeps rotting, sprouting and drawing termites long after the tree is gone. We grind it below grade, chase the major surface roots, mark buried lines before the cutter wheel touches soil and leave the spot ready for topsoil, sod or a new bed.
What Stump Grinding Does and When It Makes Sense
A stump grinder uses a spinning wheel fitted with carbide teeth to chip the stump down into small wood chips. It does not pull the root system out of the ground. Instead it removes the trunk and root flare below the surface so the remaining roots break down slowly underground, out of sight and out of the way of a mower.
Grinding is the right call when you want the yard usable again without tearing up a large area with an excavator. It is usually the better choice next to driveways, slabs and fences, where pulling a full root ball can heave pavers or crack concrete. If you need the tree itself taken down first, our tree trimming and removal crew handles that, and palms are covered under palm tree pruning and removal.
Because grinding cuts into the soil, Florida treats it as digging. We request a utility locate through Sunshine 811 before every job and wait for the marks, so a gas, power or communication line is never a surprise under the wheel.
What Our Stump Grinding Includes
Utility locate before we cut
We call in the Sunshine 811 request and confirm the public lines are marked. Those marks cover utility-owned lines only, so we also ask you about irrigation, landscape lighting and pool plumbing near the stump.
Grinding below grade
We grind the stump below the soil line, deep enough for sod or a planting bed to take hold. If you plan to set pavers or a new tree in the same spot, tell us and we will go deeper.
Surface root chasing
Roots that run along the top of the lawn are ground out along their length as far as access allows. This removes the bumps that scalp mower decks and trip people.
Grindings handled your way
The chips can stay as backfill, be spread as a temporary mulch or be hauled off. Fresh grindings pull nitrogen from soil as they decay, so we recommend hauling them where you want grass.
Backfill and cleanup
We fill the hole with screened topsoil, rake the area level and blow chips off driveways, walks and beds before we leave.

Signs It Is Time to Grind That Stump
- Suckers keep sprouting
- Laurel oaks, camphor and Brazilian pepper send new shoots from a cut stump for years. Grinding out the root crown stops most of that regrowth.
- Soft, crumbling wood
- A stump that flakes or feels spongy is decaying, and decaying wood attracts subterranean termites and carpenter ants. A stump near your home's foundation is worth removing early.
- Mushrooms around the base
- Fungal growth means rot is well underway. The stump will hollow out and can leave a sinking pocket in the lawn.
- Mowing around obstacles
- If you steer around a stump every week or keep nicking blades on exposed roots, grinding gives you a flat, continuous lawn again.
- Planning new work in that spot
- A new bed, sod, patio or tree cannot go in over a stump. Grinding comes first in the sequence.
How a Stump Grinding Job Runs
- 1
Walkthrough and estimate
We look at stump diameter, root spread, gate width and anything buried nearby, then give you a free estimate by phone or on site. You know what is included before we schedule.
- 2
Locates and marking
We phone in the Sunshine 811 locate ourselves and wait for the utility flags. On the day, we mark sprinkler heads and lateral lines around the stump so we can work around them.
- 3
Grinding
We set up the grinder, place a debris screen when windows, cars or a pool are close, and sweep the cutter wheel across the stump in passes until we reach the agreed depth.
- 4
Backfill and restore
Grindings are removed or spread as you chose, the hole is backfilled with topsoil and the area is raked level. If you want grass back, our sod installation crew can lay it once the soil settles.
What Moves the Cost of Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is priced by the work each stump takes, not a flat rate per yard. We measure and look at access before we quote, and the estimate lists each stump separately. When grinding is one piece of a bigger project, you can spread the cost out: we offer financing for amounts up to $100,000, with terms from 2 to 12 years and no penalty for paying it off early.
- Diameter and species
- A wider stump means more passes of the wheel. Dense hardwoods like live oak take longer than pine, while palm stumps are fibrous and usually grind quickly.
- Root spread and depth
- Chasing long surface roots or grinding deeper for pavers or a new tree adds time.
- Access to the stump
- A narrow side gate, a slope or a stump wedged against a fence or slab may call for a compact machine and slower, careful work.
- Buried lines nearby
- Irrigation, lighting wire or utility marks close to the stump mean hand-digging around the lines before the grinder can work.
- Haul-off and backfill
- Removing all grindings and bringing in topsoil costs more than leaving chips on site, and the choice depends on what you plan to put there.
Stump Grinding Questions
- Do I need a permit to grind a stump?
- Grinding an existing stump generally does not need a permit, because the tree is already down. Removing a living tree can require approval depending on your jurisdiction and HOA, so check that step before the tree comes down. The utility locate is still required for grinding, and we handle that request.
- How deep do you grind?
- Deep enough below grade for sod or a planting bed to grow without hitting wood. For pavers, a slab or a replacement tree we grind deeper. Tell us your plan for the spot at the estimate and we will set the depth to match.
- Will the roots keep growing after grinding?
- Most species stop once the root crown is gone, and the remaining roots decay underground. A few aggressive sprouters may push up a shoot or two, which can be cut or treated. Bamboo is a different problem and is covered under our bamboo removal service.
- Will grinding damage my sprinkler system?
- Sunshine 811 does not mark private irrigation, so we locate heads and lateral lines ourselves before grinding. If a line runs directly through the root zone, we expose it by hand and work around it.
- Will there be a dip in the lawn later?
- Some settling is normal as buried roots decay and backfill compacts. We mound the topsoil slightly to allow for it, and a light top-dress after a few months usually levels it.
