ServicesSod Installation

Sod Installation in Lake Buena Vista

We remove dead or weedy turf, regrade the soil so water drains away from your home, and lay fresh-cut sod matched to how much sun your yard gets. Before we leave, your sprinklers are set up to water it in. You also get clear instructions for the first weeks.

When New Sod Is the Right Fix

Sod makes sense when a lawn is too far gone to bring back with fertilizer and spot treatment. Signs include large dead patches from chinch bugs, turf choked out by dollarweed or torpedograss, or bare sand where shade killed the grass. Seed is not a practical option for St. Augustine, the most common grass here. Plugs can take a full season or more to spread and close the gaps. Sod gives you a closed canopy the day it goes down.

Most sod failures start below the grass. Sod laid over old thatch, compacted fill or a low spot that holds water will yellow and thin no matter how good the pallets were. That is why most of our time goes into preparing the ground. The sod itself goes down fast.

There is a rules side to this work, and we handle it. Before any digging we call in utility locates through Sunshine 811. We also check your HOA's approved grass list if you have one. Local watering restrictions include a limited establishment period for new sod, and we explain how it applies to your property so your sprinkler schedule stays within the rules.

What a Sod Job Includes

Turf and weed removal

We cut out the old grass with a sod cutter, roots and thatch included, and haul it away. Persistent weeds like torpedograss get treated first so they do not come up through the new lawn.

Grading and soil prep

We raise low spots and pitch the soil away from your foundation and slab. Then we level the surface so the new sod sits flush with walks and driveways. Where the sandy fill is very poor, we can add topsoil to help hold moisture.

Grass matched to the site

Floratam St. Augustine handles full sun, and shade-tolerant cultivars suit yards under oaks. Zoysia works well for a finer, denser look. Bahia fits large areas that will not get much irrigation. We explain the tradeoffs in water, mowing height and pest pressure.

Fresh pallets, tight seams

We schedule delivery so the sod is laid the same day it arrives, before the rolls heat up on the pallet. Pieces are staggered like brickwork, butted tight and cut cleanly around beds and sprinkler heads.

Rolling and first watering

We roll the new lawn so the roots make full contact with the soil, then soak it right away. We also check that every zone actually reaches the new turf.

Signs Your Lawn Needs Replacing

Patches that keep spreading
Brown areas that grow outward in hot, sunny spots often point to chinch bug damage. Once the runners are dead, they will not recover.
More weeds than grass
When sedge, dollarweed or crabgrass cover most of the yard, treating it costs more than starting over and rarely works.
Standing water after rain
Puddles that sit for a day mean a grading problem. New sod over that spot will rot unless the grade is corrected first.
Thin turf under trees
Full-sun grass slowly dies out as canopies grow. A shade-tolerant variety, or a bed instead of grass, is often the better answer.
Getting ready to sell
A uniform, healthy lawn is one of the quickest ways to improve how your home looks from the street.

How Installation Day Runs

  1. 1

    Walkthrough and estimate

We measure the area, check sun exposure and drainage, and run your irrigation zones. You get a written estimate that lists removal, soil, sod type and square footage separately.

  2. 2

    Locates and prep

Utility lines are marked before we cut. We remove the old turf, grade and level the soil, and adjust or raise sprinkler heads so they clear the new sod height.

  3. 3

    Laying the sod

Fresh pallets arrive that morning. We lay, trim, roll and water section by section, so no piece sits dry for long.

  4. 4

    Cleanup and watering plan

We blow off walks and driveways and haul away the old turf. You get a written watering schedule for rooting and a date for the first mow. Ongoing care is available through our lawn care service.

What Affects the Price of Sod

Price is set mostly by square footage and how much work the ground needs before any grass goes down. We walk the yard and price each part on its own line, so you can see where the money goes. Bigger lawns can be paid over time: we can finance amounts up to $100,000, with terms anywhere from 2 to 12 years, and paying the balance off early costs you nothing extra.

Area and layout
An open rectangle goes quickly. Curved beds, narrow side yards and many obstacles mean more cutting and more waste.
Grass variety
Zoysia and specialty St. Augustine cultivars cost more per pallet than bahia or standard Floratam.
Removal and grading
Thick thatch, buried debris, or low areas that need added soil and leveling add labor and material.
Irrigation changes
If heads are buried, broken or not reaching the area, we include repairs. Larger fixes can be handled through our irrigation service.
Access
Gated yards, or areas pallets cannot be driven to, mean moving sod by hand.

Sod Installation Questions

Can you lay new sod right over my old grass?
We do not recommend it. The old turf and thatch keep the new roots from reaching soil, and the dead layer underneath holds moisture and invites fungus. Removing it first is what makes the new lawn root evenly.
How often should new sod be watered?
For roughly the first two weeks, it needs short, frequent watering so the soil under the pieces stays moist. After that, we taper to deeper, less frequent cycles. We set your controller and give you a schedule that fits the local establishment-watering rules.
When can we walk on it or mow?
Keep foot traffic light for about two weeks. Once a gentle tug on a corner shows it has rooted, it is ready for the first mow at the high end of the recommended height for that grass.
Which grass is right for my yard?
It depends on sun, irrigation and how you use the lawn. St. Augustine is the usual choice for irrigated yards with good sun. Zoysia handles foot traffic well, and bahia tolerates drought but looks coarser. If you have an HOA, we also check its approved list.
What is the best time of year to lay sod here?
Late spring through summer is ideal, because warm soil and regular rain speed up rooting. Sod can go down year-round in Central Florida, but cooler months mean slower establishment and a longer watering period.
